| Hi, Patty! There's nothing available over the pond for ADHD except Ritalin, or Adderall, which is long term Ritalin. It didn't suit my daughter, as it made her feel trapped inside her own personality, and she would take it at school - communication with schools was hopeless and they all hated her - she looked "normal" but despite being super-bright, she under-achieved thanks to the illness and lack of school care. Most doctors know nothing about ADHD and you need a shrink and to really keep on at them - it took me seven years to get a firm diagnosis, but I know you have a plethora of drugs for it, which just isn't the case in the UK. I have to say, I do feel very bitter about the way the medical profession and the school system let her down.

Hey Fiz! Nice to "see" you.
Some diagnosis were entered into the DSM as a means of having treatment covered by insurance. Drug addiction is one. When it was classified as an illness insurance companies were then required to cover costs of care. I vaguely remember this being said re ADHD. No it's not a mental illness but a "patient" w/that Dx can sometimes benefit from medical care. You know, meds etc. It can also allow for Social security benefits and/or medicaid.

ANN...So nice to hear from you and know that you are taking time off to get settled in your new home. Moving is an awesome job and it's nice to have the time to place things where you want them. I'm sure you and Tweety are enjoying each other. You deserve time off and maybe after you are settled in you can have a real vacation.
GEORGIA MARY...I have searched back through the posts and am unable to find one one in which you even referred to the words 'toxic' or 'mental illness'. Maybe I overlooked something?

| My eldest daughter has ADHD which is classified as a "mental illness" in DSM 4, but she's clever bright and pretty and it doesn't stop her holding a job down or knowing how to behave! It's a brain chemistry imbalance. Why is it listed?

| I just watched a fascinating show about Who Is The Real Joran Van Der Sloot. Really a good documentary about narcissists and sociopaths as well. Since most of Ann s books are about narcissistic sociopaths, I was wondering if others have coped with people like that in their lives? What about an elderly parent who is a narcissistic sociopath? How do you cope?

| I have read a few of your books now and can't wait to read more! I have commented on here in the past about being lucky to have survived a marriage to a sociopath. In fact, to this day, I make decisions as to where I will live by how long it would take the RCMP to respond to a call from me. My divorce is not going well and dragging on. It is obvious what he doesn't wish to let go of is control of me although, he has already been engaged since the month he left (18 months ago). It is hard for people to understand what a woman goes through when they are swept away by a man who seems to be everything they dreamed of, then so much a nightmare later on. It can be hard to let go simply because when you don't see these men on a day to day basis, there is no way of knowing what is going on in their minds. It is almost safer to stay than to try to get out of the reign of terror. I have just finished Dead by Sunset and I will be bringing it to my lawyer to read. She is a woman who specializes in abuse cases and she may relate to the victim in this story very well. I know it is why I read these books, I can relate to the victim and the fear and it helps me with the reality of how dangerous of a situation I was in with a terror of a man. I was often in denial, it was a survival skill, but there comes a time when the facts must be faced.

| My mother was murdered when I was 16 so I have always found it odd that I would be such a huge fan of your books.Something that can sometimes bring up old memories.But still I find myself waiting for your new books.And sad when I come to the end of the latest.Thank-You for always being the voice of those who need you most the victim.
