| Ann, I love all your books and made for tv movies. I was wondering if you could give me tips on how to become a true crime writer. I would like to write about stories from prisoners that came from my neighborhood and there stories, also not famous stories, I do agree with you on that

I am a great fan of Ann's writing and am always impressed regarding her insight. I read this guestbook but don't post. I have been a therapist for 38 years and frankly I sometimes get tired of talking. However, the discussion regarding personality disorders is interesting, and as always, can be provocative. Which speaks to the nature of the disorder. The DSM is only a guideline, not an absolute. This is where the layman can become confused, especially when attempting to justify, define or defend. No where in any treatment setting is there more conflict than dealing with a Borderline. They create the most chaos and this can expand to the professionals treating them. A BPD is exceptionally skilled at triangulation and splitting. Their thinking is black and white and they can split the treatment team. Triangulation is described as aligning oneself with another in order to discredit or cause harm. Splitting refers to a person as being either all bad or all good. No grey. The borderline sees him-her self as always right, another as totally wrong and becomes very vindictive, often cruel and will work hard to convince others they are a victim. In treatment, we always recognize a BPD by the chaos they cause and by how they draw others into their drama.

| Does Ann answer questions on this format? I love the books but do not understand how the killers get "life" sentences and then are paroled and out of prison. WHY?

| I would love to see you write a book about the DiBartolo murder in Spokane. I knew the family and was so glad to see the husband found guilty. Please probe into this strange family and write one of your wonderful books! Love your books!

@Cally: Happy Birthday! I read your comment about Small Sacrifices. I've been trying to find it for a while now, and today I finally did. It's on YouTube, so the quality is not great, but I'm watching it right now. Ann, I can't wait to meet you again when you come to Portland!

Having simply read the DSM-IV may give one a bit of knowledge but it does not give one the skill to make a diagnosis. There is more to diagnosing an individual with a personality disorder than mere words on several pages. Many details have to be taken under consideration, including the reader and their own prejudices. It takes years of professional work, interacting and knowledge to become skilled and to be able to correctly write down a diagnosis and the AXIS number(s) that accompany this. An armchair psychiatrist or psychologist can be a duped entity, most often deceived by a person who truly is defined as a person with a personality disorder. As many know, the diagnosed deny their issues and most often declare "It's not me, it's him (or her). Why am I treated so badly?" They portray themselves blameless and victimized. So, be cautious. I have been a practicing psychiatrist for 35 years. I do have knowledge and expertise in this area.
