Ann, I think the book cover for ITSOTN is very good. Looking forward to coming to a signing and seeing you again. So glad you are feeling better all the time and I'll fix you something for your sweet tooth when I see you! Keep the faith, my friend.

I'm not a psychiatrist and I haven't been a practicing pyschologist for nearly as long as Mims, but I do know that in my experience, the most difficult client I've ever had was a mixed personality disorder (borderline/narcissistic). I should write a book. However, I won't since I'm not a writer and besides, it would drive me crazy. Unlike Ann Rule whose books I can't wait to read. Her understanding of human psychology is one of the reasons she is my favorite author.

Darralyn, there can be a few different answers to your question. Sentencing guidelines are a factor. You can google your states sentencing guidelines or if there is a specific case you are wondering about, look up that state.
Ann has more awareness of the judicial system than I however the guidelines are one of the things so frustrating to my husband-who has worked in sentencing corrections for waaaaaaaaaaaay too many years.

Ann, I love all your books and made for tv movies. I was wondering if you could give me tips on how to become a true crime writer. I would like to write about stories from prisoners that came from my neighborhood and there stories, also not famous stories, I do agree with you on that

I am a great fan of Ann's writing and am always impressed regarding her insight. I read this guestbook but don't post. I have been a therapist for 38 years and frankly I sometimes get tired of talking. However, the discussion regarding personality disorders is interesting, and as always, can be provocative. Which speaks to the nature of the disorder.
The DSM is only a guideline, not an absolute. This is where the layman can become confused, especially when attempting to justify, define or defend.
No where in any treatment setting is there more conflict than dealing with a Borderline. They create the most chaos and this can expand to the professionals treating them. A BPD is exceptionally skilled at triangulation and splitting. Their thinking is black and white and they can split the treatment team. Triangulation is described as aligning oneself with another in order to discredit or cause harm. Splitting refers to a person as being either all bad or all good. No grey. The borderline sees him-her self as always right, another as totally wrong and becomes very vindictive, often cruel and will work hard to convince others they are a victim.
In treatment, we always recognize a BPD by the chaos they cause and by how they draw others into their drama.

Does Ann answer questions on this format? I love the books but do not understand how the killers get "life" sentences and then are paroled and out of prison. WHY?
